With the impending release of the much anticipated Suffragette movie on 12th October 2015 (starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep), we thought it would be a good time to highlight the Soldiers and Suffragettes exhibition which is on until 1 November 2015 at the Museum of London Docklands.
The exhibition showcases the work of Christina Broom. Widely regarded as the UK’s first female press photographer, Christina Broom captured candid moments that were part of Edwardian life in London – First World War soldiers enjoying Christmas lunch, horse drawn carriages on Oxford Street and numerous royal events. The exhibition also showcases a number of photographs that were taken during the suffragette movement when women were actively campaigning for women’s rights. Christina’s eye for detail and for capturing arresting portraits of women who played a key role in these movements (Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, Barbara Ayrton-Gould) make this worth a visit.
